Pelleting torrefied biomass at pilot-scale – Quality and implications for co-firing

چکیده

The co-firing of solid biofuels in coal plants is an attractive and fast-track means cutting emissions but its potential linked to biomass densification. For torrefied materials this topic under-represented literature. This pilot-scale (121–203 kg h−1) pelleting study generated detailed knowledge on the densification compared untreated biomass. Four feedstock with high supply availability (beech, poplar, wheat straw corn cob) were studied their forms. Systematic methods used produce 180 batches 8 mm dia. pellets using press channel length (PCL) moisture content (MC) ranges 30–60 7.3–16.6% (wet basis) respectively. Analysis showed that moderate degrees torrefaction (250–280 °C, 20–75 min) strongly affected behaviour. highest quality black had a mechanical durability bulk density range 87.5–98.7% 662–697 m−3 Pelleting energy varied from −15 +53 kWh t−1 increases production fines. Optimal MC PCL reduced significantly for pellet was characterised by decrease increase density. Energy densities 11.9–13.2 GJ (as received) obtained.

Pilot scale study of Co-Fe-Ni nanocatalyst for CO hydrogenation in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

In this work, a Co-Fe-Ni catalyst was prepared and the effect of a range of operational variables such as gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), calcination temperature, calcination time and agent on its catalytic performance for green-fuels production was investigated. By application of different characterization techniques such as XRD, BET, TGA/DSC, and SEM, it was found that these parameters have...

Taguchi approach for co-gasification optimization of torrefied biomass and coal.

This study employs the Taguchi method to approach the optimum co-gasification operation of torrefied biomass (eucalyptus) and coal in an entrained flow gasifier. The cold gas efficiency is adopted as the performance index of co-gasification. The influences of six parameters, namely, the biomass blending ratio, oxygen-to-fuel mass ratio (O/F ratio), biomass torrefaction temperature, gasification...

Grindability and combustion behavior of coal and torrefied biomass blends.

Biomass samples (pine, black poplar and chestnut woodchips) were torrefied to improve their grindability before being combusted in blends with coal. Torrefaction temperatures between 240 and 300 °C and residence times between 11 and 43 min were studied. The grindability of the torrefied biomass, evaluated from the particle size distribution of the ground sample, significantly improved compared ...

Pilot-scale gasification of woody biomass

The gasification of pine and mixed-hardwood chips has been carried out in a pilot-scale system at a range of gas flow rates. Consuming w17e30 kgh 1 of feedstock, the producer gas was composed of w200 dm m 3 carbon monoxide, 12 dm m 3 carbon dioxide, 30 dm m 3 methane and 190 dm m 3 hydrogen, with an energy content of w6 MJ m 3 for both feedstocks. It was found that the efficiency of the system ...
